Factors external to the page ranking

3.2.1. What is this?
In the late twentieth century the search engines position the sites based solely on its content. The situation changed after the success of Google. Google's algorithms are based on the popularity of links, not only in the content of sites. So the more inbound links a site has, the higher your ranking in Google. The whole concept has not changed much since that time, popular sites usually get links to them, so this factor is applied to calculate the web rankings with the content of such sites. At present it is possible to appear in the ranking for a keyword even if a site does not contain the keyword in its text. (Test link)

No need to say that you should pay attention to factors external to the site ranking as to optimize both internal to the page. This SEO tutorial describes all the things you should keep in mind while keeping your inbound links. Read it too.

3.2.2. PageRank
On the one hand, we must separate two things: The real PageRank and PageRank green bar shown in the Google Toolbar PageRank tools and other online and offline. The PageRank bar in Google (I'll call the green PageRank PRV) is simply an indicator. The verdadedo PageRank of a site (call it PageRank or PR from now on) is a mathematical value that reflects the likelihood that a visitor to follow the links on the sites randomly, open this site in particular. The value 1 is equivalent to a 100% probability, meaning that visitors who browse the web site will always open. Sooner or later. By contrast, the value 0 means that a random visitor never gets to that particular site through a link on another site.

Not delve into the mathematics of PageRank as this information can be found easily on the web. Just highlight the key moments of the statistical nature of PageRank.

First of all should understand the following: The number of websites growing every day, while the value of PageRank is generally stable. 1 (one). In other words, there is a 100% chance that a visitor open ANY web site. But the possibilities of each particular site down more and more every minute. If you have 3 apples and two of them are wormy, what are the chances that a good choice? They are 1 / 3 or 33%. If you must choose a block of 100, only has 1% chance. That is the case of Page Rank, low every day naturally.

Due to point 1 and the enormous total sites indexed, you can not show the exact value of PageRank for each minute. That is why we need the PRV, which is updated every 3 or 4 months and shows the value of PageRank more understandable as a number from 0 to 10. This little number is closer to the actual PageRank, only shows the basic trends.

In turn, the scale of the PRV is not linear. One might think that a page with PR2 is twice as popular (or at least has two times more likely to receive a random visitor that we talked about earlier) that her brother PR1 unfortunate, but that's not true. In fact it is more likely that a PR2 site is 10 times more popular a site PR1, but 10 times less popular than a PR3. Something like that, but the number 10 is just one example, since we do not know the exact formula.
The PageRank is a random user surfing the web by following links at random sites. From a practical standpoint this means: the more web links pointing to your website, the higher its PageRank.

So now we know that the key factor external to the page ranking is the number of inbound links to a site and the green PageRank is a proxy for the number. However, the mathematical mechanism PageRank only considers a number of these links, while in fact there is also a quality factor. This is implemented through different filters and dump factors values that Google applies to every link before it is included in the calculation of PageRank.

3.2.3. Important things
This section describes the key factors external to the page ranking to which you should always pay attention.
The theme of the binding site
This is very important because links from a relevant site are much more valuable. In their attempts to create links, try to find the sites that are close or at least similar to the theme of your site. Although having a link from an unrelated site is not bad in itself and even Google admits that a webmaster has no control over who and how to create links to your site. Anyway, avoid links from unrelated sites or illegal sites or unethical content (pornography, malware, etc..).

The theme of the sites accessed through links that you think
On the other hand, you have absolute control over the links located on your site then if you create a link to an unrelated site, you are responsible for that and is your site to be penalized. So be careful which sites to create links. Links to sites not related, are not necessarily a cause for penalty, but still must be cautious and link only to quality sites.

    Anchor Text
The link anchor text input is very important and you can adapt it - try to make the most. First of all, avoid using the same anchor text in all links. Use synonyms, paraphrases, use different keywords or whatever. Second, place the important keywords at the beginning of the anchor text. Finally, do not put all your keywords in the link. Really makes no sense to use a text hyperlink over 50 to 55 characters or 10 to 12 words. Keep it short.

    Landing pages
This factor is often ignored even by SEO professionals and webmasters. Having a link to your site is not enough! The link must be a) relevant and b) quality. And you must make sure both sites, the linking and linked, to comply with these requirements. Regarding the issue of binding site, see 1. But the theme of your site should also be of quality and relevant in relation to the binding site and the link anchor text.

Well, not really necessary, but helpful to have properly optimized landing pages for each link you have. What does the "appropriate optimization?
        The landing page content to include in the words mentioned in the anchor text;
        The keywords must appear on all important places like the title tag, headers, etc.;
The general theme of the page should match those keywords.
If a landing page meets all these conditions gives a significant jump in its ranking, since the inbound links now have much more value.

    PageRank
PageRank does nothing by itself, let alone the green PageRank, it is simply a gauge of the ego. However, the PR of a binding site (or a candidate), gives an approximation of what it's worth the link on this site. In turn, a high PR website is considered reliable, and are given more value from Google. See below for more confidence factors.

A single link from a website PR 10 (if it somehow manages to have one as well), rapidly improve the PR of your own site to 7 or even 8 giving a marked improvement in your search positions. But this factor is the last in the list of factors external to the page, because you have to find a relevant website beforehand and quality you are willing to put a link to you and then (only then!), Review its PageRank. Exactly in that order. Because the quality of the content is worth a high PageRank.

3.2.4. Useful things

    Reciprocal Links
The basis of the reciprocal link is very simple: the site A links to Site B, while site B links to Site A.
        Reciprocal Links. Schedule A to B, B to A
        There are other schemes anyway:
Cross-links. The site A links to Site B from page A1, while Site B links to Site A from page B1.
        Reciprocal Links. Schedule A to B, B to A
Links circular. The site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C, ... Z site links to site A.
        Reciprocal Links. Links circular.
Links to three straight. The site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C and Site C does not return any link.

Reciprocal Links. Links to three straight.
        Combined.
        Reciprocal Links. Combined scheme.

There is a bad belief that says that reciprocal links do not work anymore. That's not true. It works, but the efficiency of this method used is much smaller than it was in 2003. In 2009, Google greatly reduces the value of reciprocal links, especially for schedule c, but the general concept still works and helps to gain places in the early and middle stages of the promotion SEO when literally every link counts.

Anyway there are some exceptions (as usual). Needless to say, you still need to carefully choose partners with whom to establish reciprocal links. Consider the theme of the binding site, its quality, its neighbors (the other sites that are linked), consider the page that links to your site, pay attention to the link anchor text, etc. You do not want to exchange links with a website that makes it spam, or sites that use spam email to the company suggestion. You do not want a link buried at a distance of 17 clicks of the homepage.

Usually you do not want a nofollow link, but even one of them coming from a relevant site can bring a large number of targeted visitors to your website, so it's up to you to decide if he expects the exchange of links is just the link juice, or even the audience. By the way, does not want a link to a page that already has more than 50 links. And the last note but not least: Do not send e-mails to owners of all Web sites with proposals for link exchanges!. That's too bad, and nobody answers as you lower your karma to 0 with this activity and will likely receive a penalty of SpamCop or any other software paranoid. Do not, I tell you.

    Web Directories
Another technique that everyone says it does not work. To be honest, the efficiency of Web directories has never been so surprising. In fact, there is a single web directory where certainly everyone wants to be included: The Google Open Directory (or DMOZ). The Google Directory is a web directory of high value human-edited free. It's a bit complicated to be included in it, because it often takes months before the proposal is approved (if ever), but worth it - a link from DMOZ is a significant boost to the value of your website and also a drop life-giving link juice.

If you have some funds available, you may want to also be included in several directories, paid inclusion, starting with the Yahoo Directory, which appears to be the most respectable of them. Also, here is a good article on requests for admission to directories should definitely read. Do not miss the list of directories to run.

    Social Networks
They would work very well, but due to the huge amounts of spam on social networking sites the method is not as effective now as it was 2 or 3 years ago. Promoting a website through social networking has its advantages and disadvantages:
Advantage: Social networking sites are crawled more often - every 2 to 3 hours. This means that if it gets there quickly get a portion of traffic from search engines.
Advantage: Social networking will not only help increase the strength of their links, but also provide a certain amount of traffic from these pages. Depending on the popularity of the article published on social networking, traffic to your site may vary from a few as a few grains of sand to a great rush of visitors.
Disadvantage: Unfortunately, this is not just bookmark a link to your website and wait for traffic. That may once have worked in the early social networking sites, but not anymore. First, the number of publications per minute does not give much opportunity for each particular publication to become popular. Your marker may simply get lost among hundreds and thousands of other markers. Second, social networking sites often have either the moderator or some other way to get users to report an inappropriate post or marker. So if you publish a bookmark or bookmark your own website, the link is removed and your account is banned. Very bad.

However, there are some workarounds for this.
Using methods whitehat. Publish an article or other valuable content (Do you hear me? Said valuable!) On your website and wait for someone else to create a link to it. So add a bookmark or favorite from that site in return. This will not increase your link popularity or PageRank, but still attract visitors. Do remember to tell the other binding site can be yours too? Then you can have a commercial site with that article and a non-commercial blog which mentioned that commodity. Or even could have another blog where he mentioned the blog that mentioned the trade item.
Using blackhat methods. Create as many fake accounts as needed to promote your bookmark or favorite in all social networking sites. Now it is difficult since this method has been revealed years ago and now social networking sites are already highly saturated with a lot of spam.
Disadvantage: Another negative point about social networks is that they tend to be in operation only for a limited period of time. We offer a burst of traffic in the short term, but then just runs out and only receive a few visits a week. On the other hand, a few visits are still more than any check at all.
Disadvantage: The worst thing about social networks is the quality of traffic they produce. Visits to social networking sites are not well targeted, are based on the impulse of curiosity, not a true intention. This means you will receive (or not - see above) a large number of visitors, but if he manages to convert even 1% of these in customers, he can congratulate himself, has done an excellent job! The conversion rate for this type of traffic is extremely low so that this formula is only effective for a limited type of web pages and products. Yet still good if you want to build a community or just need a lot of people on its website for some reason (AdSense and others).

    Reliability factors
A group of ranking factors over which you have only limited control. Each of these factors does not add value directly to the ranking of a site. Instead, increase your level of reliability. Google (and other search engines) web sites prefer reliable and gives a major boost to his ranking. The reliability factors include:
Joined the domain name. The oldest sites seem more reliable than others. If the domain changes ownership, it becomes more reliable (though do not know how much).
The amount and quality of incoming links, PageRank. If many other websites have links to this, it is considered reliable. However, the quality of the links do not play a significant role, because you have no responsibility for the links to your site because it has no control over that. On the contrary, it is possible to hurt their competitors by publishing links to them from some malware sites.
Web Site Content. If a site uses popup windows (pop-ups, pop-unders) or any SEO0 blackhat methods, the degree of reliability decreases.
Outgoing Links. If a site has links to other reliable sites, it gets to it a greater degree of confidence.
I think there are more factors, but these are the most important.

Press Releases, related resources, word of mouth, etc.
This is closely related to the topic of SEO, but you can still help you get some links. Have a scoop? Share it with the community as a thematic resource. Do you have some amazing news in your industry? Tell the world with a press release. Is conducting a special promotion, or offering a discount coupon? Please let others know.

All this usually does not require a single penny. You can send press releases via PRWeb, you can sign some free forums related to your industry to share their ideas, you can inform others about their discount coupons in the pages Giveaway of the Day or RetailMeNot and the like. Do not ignore the power of word of mouth!

3.2.5. Useless things
These ranking factors external to the page no longer works (some never did) or its value is negligible.

Many links pointing to the same page
If a page has several links that point to the same URL will not give any additional value of SEO, because Google only considers the first of all links on the page. From the point of view of internal optimization of the page, it means that you must put your links into the navigation somewhere near the end of your HTML source. From the point of view outside the page, means you only need one link from a URL, because in any case only the first is what counts.

Besides, it might hurt a little. Suppose there is an external site that has 3 links in total, and one of them pointing to your site. This would mean that a third of all the link juice that flows into your site page. Imagine asking a Webmaster to an additional link that other page to yours. Thus now has 4 links, two of which point to your site. So now the link juice is divided into 4 parts instead of 3, but take note! - Anyway the second incoming link on that page is not considered, so in that case would be getting less link juice than before.

    Nofollow Links
The SEO value of nofollow links is almost nil because they do not pass PageRank and link juice does not flow through them. However, a link is always a link. "Would reject a nofollow link on the home page of Google? This link would not give any SEO value, but the stream of traffic it would generate itself and could destroy any barrier.

    Links in signature
The signing of the post in the forums is a popular location for the links, but the SEO value of this method is extremely low. The fact is that nobody will read your signature unless it becomes a major character in that community and even in that case the links in the signature is not worth much. How many times have you opened the link in someone's signature?

SEO impact of such direct links is also tiny - usually are nofollow links, and even if they were not, would buried in the depths of the topics in the forums. The amount of link juice you could get through them is not even worth mentioning.

Does that mean we should forget about links in signatures? No. If you can be a member of the community and gain some authority in this, every word I say (and the link to your signature also) attract the attention of the entire community. This takes time and effort but nothing is free in life.

    Links in the guestbook
The ancient technique has never worked.

    Links in blog comments
Do not post comments on a blog just for the benefit of the link. First it is SPAM. Secondly, it does not work anyway. Third, most blogs have nofollow links in the comments, so do not waste your time on something that will not help, and while everyone else angry.

    Links Without PR
The amount of link juice that has a link with no PR is negligible and more importantly, the degree of confidence that happens to the linked sites is negligible too. This means it is essential to obtain links from sites with high PageRank. Waste their time on pages with no PR PR0 or not worth it, because it needs such a massive load of links to some change in the ranking of your site that probably will not even notice.

The PageRank itself (as stated in previous sections) does not directly affect the position of your website, but it does affect the degree of reliability of other pages linking to yours. As you search first choice links from trusted websites, you should prefer high PR links before others.

    Article Submission
This happens a lot in many SEO FAQs and guides throughout the Web: write an article and submit it to article sites. That does not work. Well, maybe served in the past but not now. What is an item? It is a useful piece of text that is interesting for your readers. Now imagine a person who is interested in reading more than 100,000 articles on some page similar articles. Is not it possible?, What is the problem? The problem is, that person never existed. Nobody wants to read an article made with parts of other ten items each made from some initial article written in early 2003 with an automatic software replacement for its synonyms keywords. Who wants to read those articles? Who wants a link to the authors? Nobody.

No doubt the items are definitely good and you should write some. But sending them to a website is useless items. Try instead to use some bait links.

    Submit your site to Google
It is useless, because if you have some incoming links to scan it anyway, and if you do not have - it makes no difference when you send or not to Google - it does not appear in the SERPs. Although you may need this if your site has been excluded from the index for some reason (usually for some BlackHat SEO) to include it again after you fixed the problem.
